Does CoQ10 actually help protect egg quality?
CoQ10 supports the mitochondria inside your eggs, and mitochondria are what power the energy-intensive process of egg maturation and early embryo development.† A randomized controlled trial found that women who took CoQ10 before an IVF cycle had more retrieved eggs, a higher fertilization rate, and more high-quality embryos than women who did not. CoQ10 cannot reverse an already-declining ovarian reserve, but the research supports it as a proactive, mitochondria-focused nutrient, not a fix once reserve is already low.
What "ovarian reserve" actually means, and doesn't mean
Ovarian reserve refers to the number of eggs remaining in your ovaries, not their quality. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, no single test of ovarian reserve can definitively predict a woman's ability to get pregnant, because these markers measure quantity, not the biological quality of the eggs themselves. A separate NIH resource makes the same distinction, noting that reserve testing is meant as a screening tool, not a diagnosis of ovarian failure.
That distinction matters here. Egg quantity and egg quality are influenced by different factors, and quality, specifically the health of the mitochondria inside each egg, is where nutrients like CoQ10 come into the picture.
Why mitochondria matter more than any other cell structure for egg quality
Eggs are unusually energy-hungry cells. Maturation, fertilization, and the first several days of embryo development all depend on a massive, sustained supply of cellular energy, and that energy comes from mitochondria. As mitochondrial function declines with age, egg quality tends to decline with it, independent of how many eggs remain.
A 2025 review in Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology outlines the mechanism plainly: CoQ10 functions as both an energy-production component and an antioxidant within the mitochondria, which is why researchers have studied it specifically in the context of ovarian aging and diminished reserve.
What the CoQ10 research shows
The most cited clinical evidence here comes from a randomized controlled trial of 169 women with decreased ovarian reserve undergoing IVF. Women who took CoQ10 for 60 days before their cycle had a higher number of retrieved oocytes, a higher fertilization rate, and more high-quality embryos compared with women who received no pretreatment. Fewer women in the CoQ10 group also had their embryo transfer canceled due to poor embryo development.
It is worth being precise about what this study does and does not show. The clearest benefits appeared in women with a defined diagnosis of poor ovarian response, using a specific pretreatment protocol before IVF. This is not the same as evidence that CoQ10 reverses age-related decline in ovarian reserve for every woman, and researchers themselves note that further trials are needed to confirm the size of the effect across different populations.
"What are the things that you can gain from optimizing your health?"
— Dr. Tosin Odunsi, MD, MPH, FACOG, Obstetrics and Gynecology Physician
Dr. Odunsi's framing is a useful lens for CoQ10 specifically. This is not about reversing a clock. It is about giving your mitochondria the raw materials they need to function as well as they can, starting before you are anywhere near a fertility clinic.
Proactive nutrient support, not a crisis intervention
Premium Fertility Gummies, with 13 fertility-focused nutrients, includes CoQ10 alongside Myo-Inositol, Selenium, Methylated Folate, and Vitamins B6 and B12, formulated to support reproductive wellness while trying to conceive.† Specifically, Coenzyme Q10 (100 mg) supports healthy mitochondrial energy production in eggs and ovarian reserve as part of the broader formula.†
Many women pair this with our clinically studied inositol ratio for hormone health, since Myo Chiro 40:1's studied 2000mg to 50mg ratio of Myo-Inositol to D-Chiro-Inositol supports healthy hormone signaling, ovarian health, and menstrual cycle regularity.† For a closer look at how these two products complement each other, see our comparison of fertility tea and fertility gummies and our review of the myo-inositol research. Myo Chiro 40:1 is not for use during pregnancy, so this stack is intended for the preconception window specifically.

What's still unproven, so you don't overtrust the science
CoQ10 research in fertility is genuinely promising, but it is not settled science. The strongest trial data comes from women already diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve, not from the general population of women in their 20s or early 30s who are simply being proactive. Extending these findings to "everyone should take CoQ10 in their 20s to protect future fertility" is a reasonable inference, not a proven conclusion from the trial data itself. Dosing, timing, and which form of CoQ10 matters most are also still being studied.
"My own journey taught me that fertility is rarely simple, and that caring for your body ahead of time matters. Every step you take now, in faith and with good information, is part of building the family you hope for."

Frequently asked questions
Can CoQ10 reverse a low ovarian reserve?
No. Research supports CoQ10 as mitochondrial support, not as a way to restore reserve that has already declined. It is best understood as proactive support rather than a corrective measure.
How long before trying to conceive should I start taking CoQ10?
The clinical trial with the strongest results used a 60-day pretreatment window before an IVF cycle. Many providers suggest starting fertility-focused nutrients three to six months before actively trying to conceive.†
Is CoQ10 only relevant for women with fertility diagnoses?
Most of the strongest clinical evidence comes from women with diagnosed poor ovarian response, but the underlying mitochondrial mechanism is relevant to egg quality more broadly, which is why it is included as one of several nutrients in a general preconception formula.†
What other nutrients support egg quality alongside CoQ10?
Myo-Inositol, Selenium, and Methylated Folate are commonly studied alongside CoQ10 for reproductive wellness and are included together in Premium Fertility Gummies.†
Is it safe to take Premium Fertility Gummies during pregnancy?
Premium Fertility Gummies are not intended for use during pregnancy. Talk with your healthcare provider about transitioning to a prenatal once pregnancy is confirmed.
Does ovarian reserve testing tell me my actual chance of pregnancy?
Not on its own. Ovarian reserve tests measure egg quantity, not quality, and according to ASRM should not be used alone to predict pregnancy outcomes or deny access to fertility treatment.
