Myo-inositol for fertility: what does the research say?

Myo-inositol has been studied for its role in supporting ovulation and cycle regularity, most consistently in a 40:1 ratio with D-chiro-inositol, which research suggests mirrors the body's natural plasma balance more closely than other ratios tested. Our 40:1 myo-inositol and D-chiro-inositol blend is formulated around this specific research.

Where the 40:1 ratio came from

A clinical trial comparing seven different myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol ratios published in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences found that the 40:1 combination was the most effective at restoring ovulation among all the ratios tested. A later review published in Gynecological Endocrinology confirmed that this ratio reflects the naturally occurring balance of the two compounds found in plasma.

"I would scream it from the mountaintops… gut health is so important, and specifically in fertility."

— Dr. Samantha Ess, ND, Naturopathic Doctor specializing in hormone health and fertility

Why more D-chiro-inositol isn't better

It might seem logical to assume that more of an active ingredient means a stronger effect, but research on inositol ratios has found the opposite for D-chiro-inositol specifically. Higher doses of D-chiro-inositol alone have not been shown to improve ovulation outcomes and, in some studies, appeared to worsen them, which is part of why the 40:1 ratio, rather than a higher D-chiro-inositol dose, became the studied standard.

Tolerability

Inositol has generally been well tolerated in clinical research, with mild gastrointestinal effects, like nausea or bloating, reported mainly at much higher doses than a typical 40:1 formula provides, according to a safety review indexed on PubMed.

"Fertility supplements work best as part of a bigger picture, alongside good sleep, good food, and a whole lot of patience with your own body." — Amy Suzanne Upchurch, Founder and CEO of Pink Stork

How Myo Chiro 40:1 fits into a broader routine

Our inositol supplement for ovarian and reproductive wellness delivers 2000 mg of myo-inositol and 50 mg of D-chiro-inositol daily in the studied 40:1 ratio. Many women pair it with our fertility gummies with methylated folate and myo-inositol for broader nutrient coverage, including CoQ10 and selenium alongside the inositol ratio.

Trust in what you are taking

  • Myo Chiro 40:1 uses the clinically studied 40:1 ratio referenced in the research above.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the 40:1 ratio specifically studied, rather than pure myo-inositol?

Clinical research comparing multiple ratios found 40:1 most effective at restoring ovulation and most reflective of the body's natural plasma balance between the two compounds.

Is more D-chiro-inositol better?

No. Research has found that higher doses of D-chiro-inositol alone did not improve, and in some cases worsened, ovulation outcomes compared with the 40:1 ratio.

What side effects has research reported?

Mild gastrointestinal effects like nausea or bloating have been reported mainly at doses much higher than a typical 40:1 formula.

How long does research suggest waiting to see results?

Most clinical trials on inositol ratios studied outcomes over three months or longer of consistent use.

Can I take myo-inositol alongside a fertility multivitamin?

Many women do. Talk with your healthcare provider about how the two fit together in your specific routine.
