Is it normal to get two periods in one month?
Getting two periods within the same calendar month can be completely normal, especially if you naturally have a shorter cycle. A cycle length anywhere from 21 to 35 days is considered typical, and a 21 to 24 day cycle can occasionally produce two start dates within one 30 or 31 day calendar month, even though your actual cycle length hasn't changed at all.
Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or while managing a medical condition.
Why this happens with a shorter cycle
The confusion usually comes from mixing up "calendar month" with "menstrual cycle." A calendar month runs 28 to 31 days. A menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next, and per the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, a normal cycle for most women falls between 21 and 35 days. If your period starts on the 2nd of the month and your cycle runs 24 days, your next period can land on the 26th, still within the same calendar month.
Mayo Clinic Press notes that cycle-length variation itself is expected.
"The length of your cycle varies at most by 7 to 9 days."
A large digital cohort study using cycle-tracking data found that cycle length and variability naturally differ by age, with cycle variability lowest between ages 35 and 39 and considerably higher for women under 20 and in their late 40s, reinforcing that what counts as typical genuinely differs from woman to woman and across life stages.
What can make a cycle run shorter than average
- Natural individual variation, some women simply run shorter cycles
- Recent changes in stress, sleep, or exercise routine
- Coming off hormonal birth control
- Perimenopause, when cycle length and variability often increase
Dr. Samantha Ess, ND, a naturopathic doctor specializing in hormone health and fertility, often reminds patients that noticing a change is worth taking seriously, without assuming the worst.
"Everyone just kind of wants to see what they're going through… and it's validating… but the individual care is just so important."

"Your body has its own rhythm, and it's usually not broken just because it doesn't match someone else's calendar."

When two periods a month is worth a second look
Two periods landing in one calendar month because of a naturally shorter cycle is different from unpredictable, frequent, or unusually heavy bleeding. If your bleeding pattern changes suddenly, becomes very heavy, or comes with severe pain, that is worth a conversation with your provider. Read our guides on when to see a doctor about period changes and how to support a more regular cycle, or start with our pillar guide on this summer's missed period trend.
Frequently asked questions
What cycle length would cause two periods in one month?
A cycle of about 21 to 24 days can occasionally produce two period start dates within a single 30 or 31 day calendar month.
Is a 21-day cycle unhealthy?
A 21-day cycle falls within the typical 21 to 35 day range considered normal for most women.
Should I track by calendar month or by cycle?
By cycle. Counting from the first day of one period to the first day of the next gives a far more accurate picture than counting calendar months.
Can Myo Chiro 40:1 help make my cycle more predictable?
Myo Chiro 40:1 is formulated to support cycle regularity and healthy hormone signaling as part of a daily routine.† It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any cycle-related condition.
When does a shorter cycle need medical attention?
If your cycle suddenly becomes much shorter than your usual pattern, or is accompanied by very heavy bleeding or severe pain, talk with your provider.
