Chamomile: a traditional botanical with newer clinical support

Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) has centuries of traditional use for calm and sleep, and it now has a small but real clinical trial base behind it.† A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found chamomile extract produced a statistically significant reduction in anxiety scores compared with placebo over eight weeks. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that most chamomile research to date is preliminary, and larger trials are still needed.
